Identity and history
Erbil Citadel occupies a mound formed through long settlement and anchors the city centre. It includes an urban residential quarter rather than only fortifications. UNESCO inscribed it in 2014. Standing urban form differs from deeper archaeological layers; skyline views and building details reveal different periods of adaptation and preservation.

Author historyLocal and cultural context
Erbil Citadel occupies a settlement mound in the city centre and entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. The mound, streets and houses together record long-term settlement change; its significance extends beyond a single building. Restoration areas and visitor access can change, and accounts of historic occupation do not establish present residential conditions.

Author historySettlement layers and urban form
The oval mound is a tell formed by repeated occupation and rebuilding, rather than a natural summit. UNESCO distinguishes the continuous high façades of nineteenth-century houses from the late-Ottoman fan-shaped street plan and earlier layers within the mound. Skyline, street pattern and buried settlement are different historical evidence.
Read the elevated settlement together with markets below and later urban growth. Photographs explain visible form and scale; archaeology supports the earlier chronology. The appearance of an old wall cannot date the whole settlement.
