Identity and history
Shia tradition associates Al-Askari with Ali al-Hadi and Hasan al-Askari. Its dome and other elements underwent alteration and reconstruction. The shrine, Malwiya and Abbasid palaces are distinct places; interchangeable imagery would conflate identity and history.

Author historyLocal and cultural context
Al-Askari Shrine in Samarra is associated with Ali al-Hadi and Hasan al-Askari, the tenth and eleventh Imams in Shia Islam. The mausoleums and adjoining commemorative buildings form a religious space. It is distinct from the Malwiya minaret and Great Mosque archaeological remains. Similar place labels must not conflate these sites.
